How to Keep Studying When You Are Mentally Exhausted

of course, you try to plan for it so that you never have to work yourself until exhaustion. After all, you follow the rules to become an A+ student. However, sometimes unavoidable things happen, or the workload is too high, and you’ve suddenly got to squeeze in 12 hours of studying in the ten hours before daylight.

In that case, you don’t have time to actually be exhausted. So how do you stay on the ball? There are a few strategies you can use.

Change your environment

The first thing you’ve got to do when you’re feeling your eyes droop is to change your environment. First of all, make sure that it’s not too hot, as that is sure to make you sleepy. Also, don’t have the lights too low as this will also convince your body that it’s time for sleep.

Instead, try to have the lights on high and try to include some blue light, as this will make your brain think it is morning, which will provoke you to wake up.

Another good strategy is to take afan and have it blow air into your face, as this extra stimulation will keep you going at least for a while.

Water

You’d be surprised how effective drinking enough water can be. Make sure you’ve got plenty of water within reach so that you can slip away throughout the hours and keep yourself from getting dehydrated.

Don’t overdo it, though. Otherwise, you’ll be making trips to the bathroom every ten minutes which won’t allow you to stay focused.

Graze

If you’re going to keep working for a long period of time two things are important.

  • First of all, you want to make sure you don’t get overly full as when that happens your body will divert blood from your brain, making it harder for you to concentrate (and making you even more tired).
  • Secondly, you don’t want to run out of energy and allow your sugar levels to drop as this too will exhaust you and make it far harder for you to keep on working.

For this reason, it’s important that you stock up on plenty of nutritious foods. Think fruit and healthy snacks (Granola bars are not healthy snacks). Then, make sure that you have something somewhere between every 30 to 45 minutes. This will make sure that you don’t overstuff yourself and also make certain that you don’t run your sugar levels so low that you can’t keep going.

Switch it up

In order not to burn yourself out on one subject, be certain to switch to something else every so often. The best thing you can do is study something for about one or two hours then switch to another subject and study that for one or two hours. Obviously, you can switch back again.

The point of this switching is to allow your mind to start in on something fresh. We like novelty and we’re far more likely to stay interested in something if we can make certain that it stays new and fresh.

Team up

If you can, find somebody else to study with as they will add a social dimension to what you’re doing so that it becomes more enjoyable. And, as you can probably guess, when something is enjoyable it’s far easier to keep going with that subject. So make sure you team up for your hardest college classes.

Of course, make certain that this friend actually intends to study. Some people are good to study with. Some people are good to party with. Don’t mix the two up as then you’re even further from home.

Stretch and exercise

A few minutes of exercise or stretching every hour will make you able to go that much longer. In fact, experts agree that it is important that you take a break every hour of about 10 minutes.

This will allow you to keep your brain fresh so that you can keep going and make fewer mistakes – which is obviously vital if you want to do well in your studies.

Now, be certain that when you take that break you don’t start doing something that’s equally taxing. Don’t play computer games or do anything else that will wear you out just as much. Instead, try to get away from anything that’s truly mentally engaging. That’s why stretching is a very good idea.

Go for a walk

Okay, this one will only actually work if it’s daylight (otherwise, there’s a good chance you’ll actually end up more sleepy) but if you’re studying during the daytime, every so often go for a walk. And don’t make it a meander either. Put in a decent pace, so that your heart rate goes up some.

This will have you get away from your exhaustion and will have a lot of long-term benefits as well. So why not do it every day?

Last words

Of course, the best thing you can do is cut up your study across many days. The first few hours of studying are the most effective with every hour after that decreasing in its effectiveness. So, for this time try to use the strategies outlined above. For the next time, try to cut up your studies across several days if you can.

If you do so, you’ll find you’re far more likely to retain what you’re studying and need to spend less time overall to get ready for the major tests coming your way.

Good luck!
