National Institute of Design (NID)

National Institute of Design or simply known as NID among students is the leading school of design in India. It is one of the best places in the country to learn about design. Established in the year 1961, NID (National Institute of Design) is an autonomous organization which functions under the  Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Department of Scientific and Industrial Research which comes under the Ministry of Science and Technology has recognized NID as a scientific and Industrial design research organization. Simply put it is one of the very best institutes that teach about design to the aspiring students. If you want to be a well-renowned name in the world of design then this is the place where you should try to be at.

NID is well-known and reputed not only in India but across international borders too. In the year 2010, Business Week included National Institute of Design in the list of top 50 design schools in the world. Its reputation has only grown since then. NID has got excellent faculty and wonderful learning environment. This is the reason it is one of the most popular institutes of design in the country. However, taking admission into this Institute is not an easy thing. Thousands of students apply every year to get into NID but only a few lucky ones are able to make the cut. It offers only 100 seats in its B.Des program and 275 seats in its M.Des program.

Courses

NID offers two different professional education programs at Masters and Bachelors level in 20 diverse design domains and five faculty streams. Few of NID’s field of specialization is Product Design,  Industrial Design, Graphic Design,  Apparel & Lifestyle Design and Transportation & Automobile Design.

NID has established ongoing pedagogic relationships and exchange programs with more than 55 overseas institutions in different countries.

The overall programs offered by NID are a combination of skills, theory, design projects and on-field experiences supported by cutting-edge design studios, skill & innovation labs and the Knowledge Management Centre. They also provide sponsored design projects to the students so that they can get the professional experience.

It also offers a Graduate level Diploma in design.

B. Design Courses:

The four-year-long Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) programme is offered at NID. The first year of this programme is a mandatory foundation course, only after which students can select their specialisation based on their performance and on the number of seats available.Students may apply in any of the following disciplines:

About Campus

The main NID campus is located in Ahmedabad, Gujrat. NID has built its Postgraduate campus in Gandhinagar, Gujrat while its R&D Campus is at Bengaluru.

The visitors can visit any of the campuses at any time of the year (except on public holidays). You will have to get a visitor’s pass before entering the campus which is available at the main gate.

How to apply:

In order to apply for admission in NID, the candidate must download the admission form from NID’s website. You must fill the complete form and hand it over personally or post it on any nationalized bank with a demand draft in favor of ‘National Institute of Design’.


Fee: The fee of admission form is Rs 1500 for general category students. For students belonging to reserved categories (OBC, SC/ST etc.) the fee is Rs 750.

The fee is non-refundable even if you are not selected. The selected candidates will get the hall ticket/call letter. Once you receive the hall ticket you must carry it with you along with other important documents such as eligibility certificates, birth certificate at the time of the test.


Eligibility Criteria:

B.Design: The student must not be older than 20 years of age. In case of reserved categories, the relaxation of 3 years is given. The student must have completed their higher secondary education.

M.Design: The student must not be older than 30 years of age. In case of reserved categories, the relaxation of 3 years is given. He/She must have completed Bachelors degree.


Entrance Exam:

NID holds an entrance exam known as Design Aptitude Test (DAT). It is also known as  National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED). It is one of the toughest entrance exams to crack. The test comprises of basic topics such as Composition, Communication Skills, General Mental Ability, Drawing Skills, Sensitivity to Environment and Subjects of Design.

The entrance test consists of two phases. The first phase is a written test while the second phase is a studio test.

B.Des

Phase 1: This 3 (three)-hour test is for 100 marks and the questions are both textual and visual and type. The test is conducted to gauge the candidate’s aptitude for Design Problem Solving, Visual Sense, Observation & Perception, Environmental Awareness, Mental Ability and Communication Skills.

Phase 2: Phase 2 takes place in a Studio which is followed by Portfolio Presentation and Personal Interview. The Studio Test is further divided into 3 parts- 3D Modeling, Doodling and Observation Test.

M.Design

Phase 1: The duration of this phase is 3 hours and it is for 100 marks and consists of two parts, duration of each phase is of one and half hours. Part A is of 40 marks and is a Common Foundation paper while Part B is of 60 marks and is a Specialization Paper. The test is conducted to gauge the candidate’s aptitude for Observation & Perception, Visual Sense, Design Problem Solving, Mental Ability, Environmental Awareness and Communication Skills.

Phase 2: Phase 2 comprises of a Studio Test followed by Personal Interview and Portfolio Presentation. The Studio Test is further divided into 3 parts- Doodling, 3D Modeling and Observation Test.
